Wraz z zamknięciem bram getta Irena z mamą Sabiną przeczuwały, ze Cypora w końcu przyjdzie do nich przyjdzie i były na to przygotowane. Wiedziały też, ze w getcie przebywała Dorota Mączyk- znajoma Cypory.

Pewnej nocy, kiedy były same w domu, Irenę i jej matkę zbudziło pukanie do okna. Spodziewając się wiadomości od Cypory, natychmiast pobiegły otworzyć drzwi. Ich oczom ukazały się przerażone twarze; Cypory z małą Rachelką i Dorotą. Wszystkie trzy zostały u Zawadzkich na noc. Następnego dnia Irena powiadomiła ich wspólne przyjaciółki o tym, co się stało. Jedna z nich, Ela, wyrobiła polską kenkartę dla Doroty Mączyk, na nazwisko Danuta Malinowska. Udało się tego dokonać, ponieważ Ela miała znajomości. Cypora nie chciała narażać rodziny Zawadzkich i postanowiła opuścić ich dom, jednak przedtem poprosiła panią Sabinę o opiekę nad Rachelą. Irena i jej matka zgodziły się bez chwili zawahania, nie wyobrażały sobie bowiem, że w takiej sytuacji mogłyby postąpić inaczej. Postanowiły jednak pomóc też samej Cyporze i znaleźć jej jakąś kryjówkę. Dzięki zaangażowaniu innej z przyjaciółek, Zofii Olszakowskiej, udało im się znaleźć konspiracyjne mieszkanie dla Cypory na granicy miasta. Mieszkała tam przez dwa tygodnie, w tym czasie Irena odwiedzała ją niemal codziennie, przynosząc wieści o Rachelce.

Ukrywając Rachelkę u siebie, narażały się na wielkie niebezpieczeństwo, jednak starały się o tym nie myśleć.

With the closure of the gates of the Ghetto, Irena and her mother Sabina felt that Cypora would finally come to them and they were prepared. They also knew that in the Ghetto there was a friend of Cypora, Dorota Mączyk.
One night when they were alone at home, they were woken by tapping on the window. Waiting for many days for any message from Cypora, they immedately ran to open the door. They saw terrified faces of Cypora, little Rachelka and also Dorota. The three of them stayed the whole night at Irena’s house. The next day, Irena called their friends to tell them what happened. One of the girls, Ela, made a false Polish kennkarte for Dorota – stating the name of Danuta Malinowska. She did it only because she knew who she needed to talk with. Cypora didn’t want to endanger Irena and her family, so she decided to leave, but before she did, she asked Irena's mother Sabina to look after Rachelka. She agreed without any doubts – she and her daughter knew that in such a situation they had to help.

However, they also wanted to help Cypora and find a hiding place for her. Thanks to the commitment of another friend, Zofia Olszakowska, they managed to find a conspirational flat in the suburbs. Cypora lived there for two weeks and Irena visited her almost every day, bringing some news about Rachelka.

Hiding the child at home, they were in a great danger, but they tried not to think about it.
