Irena Sendler zmarła 12 maja 2008. Miała 98 lat.
Była najbardziej znaną polską Sprawiedliwą. Uratowała ok. 2500 dzieci z Getta Warszawskiego. W 1943 roku została aresztowana przez gestapo i umieszczona na Pawiaku, gdzie była torturowana, a później skazana na śmierć. Uratowana została przez Radę Pomocy Żydom „Żegota”, z którą współpracowała przez całą okupację.
W 1965 roku została uhonorowana przez izraelski instytut Yad Vashem medalem „Sprawiedliwy Wśród Narodów Świata”, a w 1983 zasadziła drzewko w Lesie Sprawiedliwych instytutu.
Pod koniec 2006 r. z inspiracji prezydenta Lecha Kaczyńskiego, z pomocą stowarzyszenia „Dzieci Holocaustu” podjęto starania o zgłoszenie kandydatury Ireny Sendler do pokojowej nagrody Nobla w roku 2007. Na początku 2008 roku akcja ta została z inicjatywy Prezydenta RP wznowiona.
11 kwietnia 2007 r. decyzją Międzynarodowej Kapituły Orderu Uśmiechu, na wniosek 15-letniego Szymona Płóciennika z Zielonej Góry, Irena Sendler odznaczona została „Orderem Uśmiechu”. Powiedziała, że obok listu od Ojca Świętego Jana Pawła II i tytułu Sprawiedliwej Wśród Narodów Świata to Order Uśmiechu, odznaczenie od dzieci, jest dla niej największym szczęściem, jakie ją spotkało.

Dziś zmarła Irena Sendlerowa.
Gdyby nie osoby takie, jak Ona, czyli Sprawiedliwi, świat wyglądałby dziś zupełnie inaczej. Irena Sendlerowa uosabiała szczególny symbol bezinteresownej pomocy w okrutnych czasach okupacji, dając nowe życie ponad 2500 dzieci.
Dzięki takim ludziom możemy być dumne, że jesteśmy Polkami.

Irena Sendler died on 12th May 2008. She was 98.
She was the most well-known Polish Righteous. She saved about 2500 childern from the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and placed at Pawiak, where she was tortured and later sentenced to death - fortunately, the Council for Aid to News „Żegota” rescued her (she was working with “Żegota” through the entire occupation).
In 1965 she was honoured “The Righteous Among the Nations” medal by the Yad Vashem Institute. In 1983, she planted her own tree in the Hall of Remembrance.
At the end of 2006, with the inspiration of the President of Poland Lech Kaczyński and with the help of the Children of the Holocaust Association in Poland, there have been made an effort to submit the candidature of Irena Sendler for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2007.
On the 11th april 2007, she was awarded the “Order of Smile”, a prize given by children. She said later that in addition to a letter from Pope John Paul II and the title of the Righteous Among the Nations the Order of Smile, the award from children, is her greatest happiness.

What would we do without people like her and other Righteous Among the Nations? Surely the world of today would look a lot different. Irena Sendler was a great person. She is a special symbol of disinterested assistance in the cruel and tragic times of the war, who gave a new life to over 2500 children.
Having such great people like her as our compatriots, we can be even more proud of the fact that we are Poles.
